Second-Third Grades

SLB MaterialsStructured Language Basics (SLB)

Empower, Enlighten, and Advance

Structured Language Basics (SLB) is a five-day training which provides second and third grade teachers with a structured, multisensory, scripted curriculum that addresses the needs of a variety of readers, from reading-disabled to gifted. SLB features instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, oral reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, handwriting, and spelling (includes spelling lists). Advanced syllable division and root-and-affix instruction prepares students to confidently attack multisyllabic words. Grammar instruction helps students develop strong sentence writing skills, which eventually lead to strong paragraph composition. Each lesson contains a decodable story for fluency development and assessment. Periodic student assessments occur every 15-20 lessons. Complement SLB with your favorite basal, guided-reading, or authentic literature for a supercharged literacy block.

Teachers who attend Structured Language Basics are able to access a new Users of SLB page full of helpful instructional videos, online resources, and material order forms. If you have taken SLB and would like to access this page, contact Sarah
