Reading & Writing Techniques. (14 Hours) Two-day training.
· RWT is most appropriate for teachers and tutors who want to learn how to effectively teach the written language skills of spelling, vocabulary, grammar, written composition, and reading comprehension to 4th-8th grade students who have learning differences. RWT may be appropriate for special education teachers of 9th grade to adult students as well as regular education teachers of low-performing 4th or 5th grade classroom populations. The RWT curricula are written for students who are reading below grade level, but who have the ability to read at a minimum 2nd grade reading level. RWT consists of four modules, each of which can be used independently:
· Spelling Fundamentals – This program focuses on the most reliable ways to spell the 44 sounds of the English language. The program also teaches rules associated with doubling letters of base words and adding suffixes to base words. It provides a method to teach words that do not follow the rules or reliable spelling patterns. Spelling Fundamentals includes spelling lists that range in level of difficulty from 1st grade to 7th grade. Materials include a Spelling Fundamentals teacher's manual and a spelling deck for instantaneous review of appropriate spellings.
· Vocabulary Building Blocks – This program focuses on common roots and affixes of English words and their Anglo-Saxon, Greek, or Latin origins. Materials include a Vocabulary Building Blocks teachers' manual with scripted lessons and prefix, suffix, and root decks.
· Power Grammar & Composition – This program uses a hands-on approach to teach the proper sequence and function of words in sentences and the proper sequence of sentences in major paragraph types. Materials include a Power Grammar & Composition teacher's manual with scripted lessons; teacher and student parts-of-speech cards, and teacher concept cards.
· Reading Comprehension – This program focuses on fluency as it relates to comprehension, the teacher's role of moderator in classroom discussions, and the skills necessary to develop six major comprehension strategies. Materials include comprehension strategy and fluency folders.
