Community Volunteer Tutoring Program
December, January, and February Training Dates now Available.
Payne Education Center has often been approached by corporate, business, and nonprofits literacy organizations about the need for user-friendly reading kits for community volunteers who go into schools to aid teachers and assist students with reading. Payne’s incentive to help with this community need is a perfect match with the fulfillment of its mission.
A committee of community volunteer stakeholders provided input about reading tutoring needs. Payne Education Center’s Master Instructor Director of Education authored a community Volunteer Tutoring reading kit. Creation of the Kit was structured in compliance with Payne’s seminal knowledge and experience about the science of reading and Structured Multisensory Language Alphabetic Phonics instruction and learning. Payne’s author was meticulous about the design and multisensory based content of the reading kit, appropriate reading intervention strategies for struggling students, the concomitant 3-hour mandatory training for community volunteers on use of the kits, simple student reading assessments, and record keeping logs.
Payne conducted tutor training whereby Community Volunteers received a 3-hour training on how to use the reading kit with a student. A 10-week pilot implementation of the kits was completed by several tutors who used the kits with students, including the use of user friendly assessments. The pilot tutors provided feedback to Payne about the kit’s effectiveness resulting in recommended changes. It is expected that the Reading Kits will be used by parents and home schooled children; the juvenile justice system is also a possibility.
Payne has trained over 100 community volunteers who are already working with Oklahoma students. This training is offered at least once a month; please check PayneEducationCenter.org for available dates.
Tutor Training costs $25.00 per person. The Volunteer Tutoring Kits costs $50.00 each. A Tutor Kit can be used with more than one student. Materials in the Tutor Kit include: 1 Volunteer binder with Table of Contents and 32 tutor lessons with multisensory methods; 1 Student Binder with reading practice lessons that correspond with the Tutor lessons; Volunteer Reading Deck; Volunteer Sight Word Deck; Volunteer Prefix-Suffix Deck; Blue Alphabet Letters; Blue Arc Alphabet Mat; Transparent Counters; 1 Mirror; Readiness Tests for 2nd - 4th grades, student log reports. The binders are copyrighted by Payne, but the Student material can be duplicated for use with the student so that the student ‘master copy’ is not consumed.
