October 2014 TRAINING NOW AVAILABLE!!!
Payne Education Center Community Volunteer/Paraprofessional Tutoring Program Kits
Payne Education Center has often been approached by corporate, business, and nonprofits literacy organizations about the need for user-friendly reading kits for community volunteers who desire to work with struggling readers. Payne’s incentive to help with this community need is a perfect match with the fulfillment of its mission.
The Volunteer Program Kit is to be used by volunteers in schools, paraprofessionals, parents, and others interested in improving literacy rates in children. The Volunteer Program is in compliance with Payne’s seminal knowledge and experience about the science of reading and Structured Multisensory Language Alphabetic Phonics instruction and learning. The Volunteer Program Kit is based on a multisensory design to encompass basic reading needs and exposure to age-appropriate reading stories and articles, an avenue to vocabulary acquisition. The Kit includes simple assessment and record keeping logs, and requires a 3-hour training for community volunteers on use of the Kits.
Payne has trained 80 community volunteers who work with children. Upcoming trainings will be scheduled so check the Payne website for training dates. The training is designed to serve those individuals who are interested in improving their basic reading skills. A cross-curricular section provides reading practice in social studies, science, and math as well as a writing prompt.
Tutor Training costs $25.00 per person. The Volunteer Tutoring Kits cost $50.00 each. A Tutor Kit can be used with more than one student. Materials in the Tutor Kit include: 1 Volunteer binder with Table of Contents and 36 tutor lessons with multisensory methods; 1 Student Binder with reading practice lessons that correspond with the Tutor lessons; Volunteer Reading Deck; Volunteer Sight Word Deck; Volunteer Prefix-Suffix Deck; Blue Alphabet Letters; Blue Arc Alphabet Mat; Transparent Counters; 1 Mirror; Readiness Tests, and student log reports. The binders are copyrighted by Payne, but the Student material can be duplicated for use with the student so that the student ‘master copy’ is not consumed.
Underwriting funding for this project is being solicited from community funders. Ronald McDonald House Charities – OKC and Global, American Fidelity Assurance Company, United Way of Central OK, and the OKC Metro Literacy Coalition are Tutor partners and contributors. The Oklahoma Industrialization Center has benefited from Payne support.
PLEASE NOTE THAT STANDARD POLICY BY PAYNE EDUCATION CENTER IS THAT PAYNE READING MATERIALS ARE NOT TO BE USED WITH STUDENTS BY INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE 3-HOUR TUTOR TRAINING.
