| Which training is right for you? Our trainings are designed to fit well within a variety of teaching situations. Review the 3 tiers of training below to determine which trainings will best meet your needs. Then, review our training catalog for detailed class descriptions, dates, cost and training materials included.
Tier 1 - Core Reading Programs: A scientifically based core curriculum in the regular classroom provides students with the knowledge needed to become skilled readers. The one-day and half-day trainings at this level are intended to complement the core language arts curriculum implemented in the classroom.
Tier 2 - Intervention Programs: Some students require small group intervention in addition to their regular classroom work. Reading Specialists, Special Education Teachers, Speech Language Pathologists as well as Regular Classroom Teachers participate in the trainings under this level to use in a variety of small group situations.
Tier 3 - Remediation Programs: Some students need intensive remediation in Alphabetic Phonics based curriculum designed to teach students with language learning differences, like dyslexia, to become successful readers. Whether they are adult unskilled readers or children with diagnosed learning differences, these curricula will best meet their unique needs.

Navigate Readiness (6 Hours)
Appropriate for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and transitional 1st grade teachers, special education teachers and speech-language pathologists.
Pre-reading curriculum focusing on prevention of reading difficulties.
Teachers will learn:
- Phonological awareness activities
- Letter recognition and alphabet sequencing activities
- Oral language including vocabulary, comprehension, listening and verbal expression
- Multi-sensory techniques to develop sound-symbol relationships

Advanced Alphabetic Phonics (100 Hours)
- Continuation of Alphabetic Phonics training may earn trainees a certificate as an Alphabetic Phonics Therapist
- Trainees are recognized as a Certified Academic Language Therapist upon completion of course requirements and successful results on the national exam
Course Requirements:
- Fulfill all Introductory Alphabetic Phonics requirements
- Participate in a 2-week summer training
- Attend 3 Saturday seminars & Complete 5 demonstrations
- Work with an individual or small group throughout the year
- Log 350 practicum hours

Reading & Spelling: Secondary (30 Hours)
Formely named Language Basics: Secondary. Appropriate for teachers of intermediate, secondary, and adult students, 4th grade and higher, who are reading inefficiently and have difficulty with spelling and written language.
Designed to improve the reading and spelling skills of adolescents and adults. Written for students who are reading at a minimum 2nd grade level, who have weak word attack skills, and have even greater difficulty with spelling and written language.
Teachers will learn:
- Balanced, multisensory approach to reading and spelling
- Different kinds of syllables, division of longer words, reliable spelling patterns,rules for adding affixes, word origins and frequently misspelled words

Introductory Alphabetic Phonics (100 Hours)
Appropriate for Elementary Special Ed teachers, Reading Specialists, Speech Pathologists, and private tutors.

Structured Language Basics (30 Hours)
Enhanced and renamed version of Language Basics: Elementary. Appropriate for Elementary Teachers, Tutors, Special Education, Reading Specialists. 1st through 3rd grade.
Alphabetic Phonics-based curriculum that provides explicit instruction in the teaching of reading and spelling skills.
A research based, structured, scripted language curriculum.
Teachers will learn:
- Multisensory methods of teaching decoding, comprehension and spelling vocabulary, grammar and composition that can be integrated within existing language arts curricula or phonics-based programs
- Systematic, structured, sequential and discovery-based instructional techniques
NOTE: Certification as an Associate Academic Language Teacher (AALT) by the Academic Language Therapy Association available as an extension of SLB Training.
AALT Course requirements:
- Participate in 5 day summer training of Structured Language Basics
- Attend 2 Saturday Seminars
- Exit exam at final Saturday Seminar
- Complete 5 teaching demonstrations of an entire lesson
- Teach 60 hours min. (40 minute lessons) over 9 month period
