October 29 Volunteer Training Class

Posted by David Gilliland on 10/13/2016

Oklahoma City – Become a volunteer tutor and directly impact your community through Payne Education Center’s Community Volunteer Tutor Training Program. Payne is offering two four-hour courses on Saturday, October 29th in Oklahoma City for those interested in tutoring children or adults in reading. The morning course (8:30 am-12:30 pm) focuses on tutoring elementary level children, while the afternoon course (1:00 pm-5:00 pm) is structured for tutoring middle and high school, as well as adult learners. The cost of each course is $150 and trainees receive a curriculum manual, student workbook, and a practice kit with physical materials for student reading exercises. For those wanting to tutor readers of all ages, there is no need to sign up for both courses. Simply choose the course which corresponds with the age group you plan to tutor most frequently.

Nearly 40 percent of Oklahoma’s third grade students read below grade level and one in five people has symptoms of dyslexia. Students of all ages, with and without dyslexia, can become competent readers, writers, and spellers with the use of Payne’s multisensory reading instruction.

Taught by a highly qualified Payne Instructor, tutor training is a beneficial tool for community members who wish to provide tutoring in reading but feel they do not have the confidence or expertise. Payne training includes learning the techniques and necessary materials for working with struggling readers of any age. The focus is on strategies to develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary skills, which help students succeed.

“Tutors can provide invaluable support to a struggling reader,” said Karen Leatherwood, Ph.D., Payne Qualified Instructor. “Payne’s Tutor Training program provides not only a toolbox of resources for tutors, but also instills in them the confidence to successfully mentor and enrich a person’s life using evidence-based reading practices.”
