Payne Education Center Receives $3,000 Grant from Dollar General Literacy Foundation

Posted by Ashley Watts on 11/03/2014

[Oklahoma City, OK] – [November 3rd, 2014] – The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Payne Education Center a $3,000 grant to support youth literacy.

“Grants received, like the one from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, assist Payne Education Center in providing world-class reading instructional methods to teachers, thus helping teachers to become expert and knowledgeable educational forces as teachers of reading,”  said Carrie Brown, Executive Director of Payne Education Center.  “By giving teachers the tools necessary to successfully teach children how to read, we are helping impact the statistic that 20 percent of children with dyslexia struggle to read; and one in five Oklahomans is functionally illiterate.  Oklahoma’s educational system has the goal of creating a literate and educated citizenry, and Payne’s mission helps achieve this unquestioned goal.”

“Youth literacy grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation make a distinct impact on the communities we serve by supporting programs that improve education and enhance literacy,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO.  “At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of Serving Others and it’s exciting to see the real difference literacy and learning make in people’s lives.”

Each year, Payne hosts a variety of trainings focusing on the learning needs of struggling readers for pre-kindergarten through 6th grade teachers. Teachers who receive Payne’s specialized training learn to clearly recognize potential reading problems early on in their students and they are trained to provide a strong, successful reading solution.

Awarded at the beginning of the academic year, youth literacy grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation help provide teachers, schools and organizations with the funding and resources they need to properly begin the school year.  This fall, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded nearly $4 million to approximately 825 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations to enhance and support youth literacy and education across the United States.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education since its inception in 1993.  In the past 21 years, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $97 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 5.8 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
