Premier Card 2016 Results

Posted by David Gilliland on 12/22/2016

OKLAHOMA CITY –December 22, 2016 – Payne Education Center, with the help of supporting merchants in Oklahoma City, Edmond, and Norman – along with dedicated sponsors, raised over $87,000 to fund Payne’s teacher training programs and help raise dyslexia awareness in Oklahoma by selling and honoring the 2016 Premier Card. Payne’s Premier Card gives shoppers up to 20 percent off at more than 145 stores. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser help train teachers to teach children with learning differences, such as dyslexia, how to read using a scientifically based multisensory approach.

“The proceeds from Premier Card support Payne Education Center by providing funds to offer world-class reading instructional methods to teachers, helping them to become expert and knowledgeable teachers of reading,” said Carrie Brown, Ph.D., Executive Director of Payne Education Center. “By giving teachers the tools necessary to successfully teach children how to read, we are helping impact the statistic that 20 percent of children with dyslexia struggle to read; and one in five Oklahomans is functionally illiterate. Oklahoma’s education system has the goal of creating a literate and educated citizenry, and Payne’s mission helps us strive to achieve this unquestioned goal.”

From October 21-30, over 145 central Oklahoma stores honored the Premier Card. Major sponsors for the event included: Red Coyote Running & Fitness, Hudiburg Auto Group, Fred Jones Family Foundation, Paper ‘N More, The Oil Tree by Olive & Co., Heritage Trust Co., and NBC Bank.

“On A Whim is honored to support the Premier Card program,” said Jane Adams of On A Whim. “Teachers who’ve had Payne training are better equipped to help our children achieve success. What an incredible gift for our teachers, children, and community. The benefits to the card purchaser are immediate. For 10 days you receive a 20 percent discount on purchases from participating merchants. The benefits to the community are boundless!”

Since 1984, Payne has trained more than 18,000 teachers, ensuring success for hundreds of thousands of children, giving life to the vision that “No child should struggle to read.”

Nearly 40 percent of Oklahoma’s third grade students read below grade level and one in five people have symptoms of dyslexia. All students, with and without dyslexia, can become competent readers, writers, and spellers with the use of Payne Education Center’s multisensory reading instruction.
