Tutor Training (Reading Intervention 101)

Why Take Payne Education Center's Reading Intervention (RI 101)?

Because it takes an entire community to build strong readers!

Payne Education Center is often approached by corporate, business, and nonprofits literacy organizations about the need for user-friendly reading kits for community volunteers who want to work with struggling readers. This community need is a perfect match with the fulfillment of PEC's mission. The RI 101 Kit is based on a multisensory design to encompass basic reading needs and exposure to age-appropriate reading stories and articles, an avenue to vocabulary acquisition. The Volunteer Program is in compliance with Payne’s seminal knowledge and experience about the science of reading and Structured Multisensory Language Alphabetic Phonics instruction and learning.

What is RI 101 Training?

Volunteer tutor training, now titled Reading Intervention 101 (RI 101), is a one-time, 4-hour requirement. Typically held on a Saturday monthly and taught by one of our Qualified Instructors, RI 101 is a beneficial tool for community members who are interested in supplemental reading practice for a struggling reader. RI 101 is in compliance with Payne’s seminal knowledge and experience about the science of reading and Structured Multisensory Language instruction and learning.

Payne offers two types of volunteer-level training: one focusing on tutoring elementary level children, and another structured for tutoring middle and high school, as well as adult learners. You don't need to take both courses to tutor all age ranges. Take the course that aligns closest to the age ranges you plan to tutor. If you take either of the courses, you will receive materials from both courses.

Who is this training intended for?
  • Volunteers in schools
  • Paraprofessionals
  • Parents
  • Anyone interested in improving literacy rates in children
How much does training cost?
  • Reading Intervention 101 (RI 101) costs $175 per person. This includes all materials needed to start working with students (kits can be used with more than one student).
  • Scholarships may be available for those in need.
What materials are included in my RI 101 Kit?
  • 1 volunteer binder with table of contents and 36 tutor lessons
  • 1 student binder with reading practice lessons that correspond with the tutor lessons
  • Volunteer reading deck
  • Volunteer sight word deck
  • Volunteer prefix-suffix Deck
  • Alphabet letters
  • Arc alphabet mat
  • Colored discs for alphabetizing
  • 1 mirror
  • Readiness tests
  • Student log reports

The binders are copyrighted by Payne, but the student material can be duplicated for use with the student so that the student ‘master copy’ is not consumed.

Underwriting funding for this project is being solicited from community funders. If you wish to contribute or learn more, please reach out.

PLEASE NOTE THAT STANDARD POLICY BY PAYNE EDUCATION CENTER IS THAT PAYNE READING MATERIALS ARE NOT TO BE USED WITH STUDENTS BY INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE 4-HOUR RI 101 TRAINING.
